RAPAPORT… Cred Jewellery in the U.K. sourced what it called the world’s first Fairtrade & Fairmined silver in December. The metal originated in the Sotrami mine in Peru, one of the mines certified as Fairtrade & Fairmined by the Fair Trade Labeling Organization and the Alliance for Responsible Mining. fair trade silver

The silver is found in small quantities at Sotrami alongside deposits of gold and, therefore, it received the same fair trade mark, according to Cred Jewellery.

Cred Jewellery stated it has now contributed more than $100,000 in fair trade premiums to the mining communities in Peru, Bolivia and Colombia. The fair trade label provides miners with safe working conditions,  a steady and fair income from a 10 percent Fairtrade & Fairmined premium.

Since 2003, Cred Jewellery has been working directly with miners and other industry groups to develop standards to ensure safe working practices and a fair wage for the miners, to develop their communities and protect the environment, and ensure a transparent supply chain for gold. These standards became the foundation of the Fairtrade & Fairmined certification for gold mines, which was launched on Valentine’s Day 2011.
