RAPAPORT… The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) announced that they support India’s decision to block the trade of Zimbabwe diamonds since those stones could eventually end up in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. At present, the Kimberley Process has not yet approved rough exports from Zimbabwe, but there have been some rough sales without approval.
Sanjay Kothari, vice chairman of GJEPC, told the Times of India, “The U.S., U.K. and Australia have reservations over the export of diamonds from Zimbabwe. As far as the U.S. is concerned, India exports 50 percent of its polished diamonds to U.S. Thus, we do not want to jeopardize the interest of these countries for the sake of importing diamonds from Zimbabwe.”
Kothari told the newspaper that a decision on Zimbabwe’s rough exports was expected soon.
