Sierra Leone: U.N. Peacebuilding Office to Set-up in Freetown

RAPAPORT…  The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to create a  peacebuilding office in Sierra Leone.  Resolution 1829 mandates for a U.N. Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone, which is tasked with helping the government monitor and promote human rights, democracy, and the rule of law against corruption. The mandate runs October 1, 2008 through September 30, 2009.

The office will be staffed with as many as 70 employees.

The Council stated that the government “bears the primary responsibility for peacebuilding, security and long-term development in the country,” and urged political leaders to promote good governance, create jobs, and develop the private sector.
