RAPAPORT… The Kimberley Process (KP) may decide to publish diamond export statistics. The issue was under discussion during a closed door session at the 14th Kimberley Process annual plenary conference in Gaborone, Botswana. Up until this point the diamond data has only been available to KP members. The exact format of how the information will be distributed remains under negotiation by the KP’s statistics committee.
Non-governmental organizations and industry leaders have urged KP participants to allow more transparency within the diamond industry so that non-KP members could determine whether more diamonds were being exported than actually mined, indicating possible illegal diamond trade.
The industry has been under fire by non-governmental organizations for its lack of internal controls and transparency .
