Pakistan Arrests Conflict Diamonds Al Qaeda Operative

(Rapaport…Aug 2, 2004) Pakistan arrested early last week Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a high-level al Qaeda operative who is suspected of being involved in the trading of so-called conflict diamonds.

It has been widely reported that Ghailani, who is of Tanzanian origin, ran a $20 million al Qaeda financing operation trading illegal conflict diamonds with accomplice Abdullah Mohammed in the Liberian capital of Monrovia.

Ghailani was indicted in the U.S. in December 1998 for his alleged involvement in the 1998 bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya.
