(Rapaport…December 15, 2002) Canada passed a bill on December 12, 2002 that bans conflict diamonds and reaffirms its commitment to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. Government officials stated that Canada will be ready to implement the Kimberley Process as of January 1, 2003.
Canada contributes 6 percent to world production of diamonds by value. The opening of the Diavik mine next year will rank it among the top world producers.
