(Rapaport…May 15, 2002) Liberia called upon its military to report for duty as a stepped-up rebel insurgency pressed on the capital of Monrovia. Military officials said that on May 14 they successfully expelled a rebel advance into the hometown of President Charles Taylor, just outside the capital. Rebels have said they do not want to attack the capital, which would result in a high number of civilian casualties, but that they will do so if Taylor is not arrested and tried for crimes against humanity.
