Congo Considering a Review of Mining Contracts

(Rapaport…April 11, 2002) The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is considering a review of the way it awards mining contracts, according to the BBC, to ensure that they do not lead to illicit financial gain. Late last year, a group of United Nations experts recommended imposing a moratorium on the purchase and import of precious natural resources, including diamonds, copper and gold, in areas of the DRC controlled by foreign or rebel forces.
