(Rapaport…April 9, 2002) Amnesty International (AI) has expressed concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in Liberia, warning that if allowed to continue it could threaten the fragile peace recently made in neighboring Sierra Leone. A recent AI report indicates that Liberia’s two-month old state of emergency is being used to violate human rights and crack down on freedom of expression. The report also accuses the Liberian government of failing to protect civilians who are now fleeing to Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Ghana.
