(Rapaport…April 1, 2002) Imprisoned Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebel leader Foday Sankoh cannot run in Sierra Leone’s presidential election, scheduled for May, because he is not a registered voter in the country. Chief Electoral Commissioner Walter Nicol said Sankoh is prohibited from being a candidate for the newly created Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP) because he has not registered with the electoral commission. Sankoh did not register because he had been imprisoned at an undisclosed location for the past two years under the country’s State of Public Emergency regulations. The state of emergency was lifted in March, but Sankoh was then promptly brought before a court on a 70-count indictment of murder, attempted murder and related charges.
