Angola Signs Preliminary Cease-Fire Agreement With UNITA

(Rapaport…April 1, 2002) The leadership of the Angolan armed forces signed a preliminary cease-fire agreement with UNITA rebels on March 27. The parties are scheduled to sign a final agreement on April 4. Angola’s parliament is expected to offer amnesty to UNITA’s 50,000 rebel fighters and work toward their eventual integration into the Angolan Armed Forces.

The Angolan government and UNITA singed a truce on March 15. UNITA’s former leader, Jonas Savimbi, was killed by Angolan government fighters on February 23.
