(Rapaport…January 17, 2002) Members of a United Nations planning mission signed an agreement with the Sierra Leone government in Freetown on January 17, establishing a tribunal to prosecute persons who committed war crimes during Sierra Leone’s civil war. The Special Court of Sierra Leone will have the power to try persons who committed serious crimes under Sierra Leonean law, including arson and crimes against women. The tribunal will include both international and Sierra Leonean judges.
