Disarmament Resumes in Eastern Sierra Leone

(Rapaport…January 2, 2002) Disarmament resumed in the Kenema District in eastern Sierra Leone after a brief stall prompted by fatal clashes in the area, which left seven people dead and injured approximately 40. A United Nations spokesman said 209 Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels disarmed on Sunday, December 30, and some 609 pro-government Civil Defense Forces in the Kenema area disarmed during the weekend as well.
