U.N. Extends Ban on Sierra Leone Rough Diamond Imports

(Rapaport…December 20, 2001) The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved an 11-month extension of its ban on imports of rough diamonds from Sierra Leone. The ban and its extension are both legally binding by all member states and will be reviewed after six months. At that time, the Council will reassess the state of Sierra Leone and the extent of the government’s authority over diamond-producing areas.
