Liberian President Says Foes Are Trying to Kill Him

(Rapaport…December 18, 2001) Liberian President Charles Taylor said he will not attend a West African summit because he has evidence that his enemies are plotting an assassination attempt against him. The annual summit, sponsored by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), will takes place in Dakar, Senegal on December 19 and 20. Taylor’s government forces thwarted a rebel attack in late November that brought rebel fighters within 60 miles of the Liberian capital, Monrovia. Taylor said that rebels are currently talking in Guinea about how to prepare a scheme that will send a new shipment of arms to Liberia.
