Sierra Leone Disarmament Exceeds UN Goal of 30,000

(Rapaport…November 12, 2001) The number of combatants who have disarmed as part of the UN mission in Sierra Leone has exceeded the 30,000 target set by the government, rebels and the UN. As of November 9, nearly 30,300 fighters had laid down their arms. UN spokeswoman Margaret Novicki said she hoped that nationwide disarmament would be completed by the November 30 deadline.

The UN is scheduled to destroy the approximately 7,600 weapons collected during the disarmament process on November 12.
