(Rapaport…November 9, 2001) A United Nations helicopter crashed into the sea off the coast of Sierra Leone near Freetown on November 7, presumably killing all seven people aboard. The Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter — part of the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) team helping disarm combatants in that country — was carrying a four-member Ukrainian crew, two Zambian officers, and a Bulgarian UN civilian air operations staff member. Officials say the cause of the accident is assumed mechanical and no foul play or sabotage is suspected. Three bodies have been recovered.
