(Rapaport…November 2, 2001) Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida terrorist network has acquired millions of dollars in the past three years through the illicit trade of diamonds mined by Sierra Leone rebels, the Washington Post reports. The Post cites U.S. and European intelligence officials and other sources with alleged direct knowledge of the trade and says diamond dealers working with al-Qaida bought stones under market value and sold them in Europe for large profits. The report estimates the earnings to be in the millions.
