UN Panel Recommends Additional Sanctions on Liberia

(Rapaport…October 29, 2001) A United Nations panel has recommended extending sanctions against Liberia, citing the nation’s continued relationship with Sierra Leone’s Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels and its role in the diamonds-for-arms trade. The panel recommends introducing an embargo on Liberian lumber as well as placing revenues from Liberia’s shipping registry in escrow. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan insisted on October 11 that additional sanctions could hurt ordinary Liberian civilians.
