(Rapaport…October 19, 2001) The UN Security Council has approved UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s recommendation to extend the mandate of the UN office in Angola for another six months, until mid-April 2002. The Security Council has urged leaders of the rebel group UNITA to end military actions and enter into negotiations with the Angolan government on how to conclude the implementation of the Lusaka Protocol.

“Council members reiterated their position that the primary responsibility for the continued fighting lies with UNITA,” said Council president Richard Ryan of Ireland.
