(Rapaport…October 18, 2001) The UN is considering taking the next step in its battle against the conflict diamonds trade by dropping its “name and shame” campaign – which entails the issuing of reports on individuals and institutions that violate conflict diamonds sanctions imposed on countries like Angola, Liberia and Sierra Leone – and instead focusing on finding ways to use the evidence to tighten sanctions. The Security Council is also considering merging the three existing panels on Angola, Sierra Leone and Liberia into one general sanctions review group.
