UNITA Calls for Renegotiation of Peace Accord

(Rapaport…September 28, 2001) Angola’s UNITA rebels demanded that the Lusaka Protocol – a peace pact between rebels and the government that was signed in1994 – be renegotiated before it will end the 26-year-old civil war or participate in elections in the country.

“This protocol can no longer be applied in its entirety because it has suffered so many violations on the part of the signatories and the UN that to insist on its application is tantamount to prolonging the war,” UNITA leaders said in a statement emailed to Reuters in Johannesburg.
