Sierra Leone Parliament Says No Elections For Six Months

(Rapaport…September 14, 2001) Sierra Leone’s parliament has voted to postpone presidential and parliamentary elections for six months, ruling that the country is still too insecure, AP reports. Because the war has been declared at an end, opposition parties and civil society groups have opposed the delay.

The Revolutionary United Front (RUF) has called for the formation of an interim government to rule during the postponment period. The current government opposes the move.
