(Rapaport…August 6, 2001) The UN launched a new initiative on August 3 aimed at informing the people in northern Sierra Leone about the role of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), an organization that promotes resolution of the bloody conflict plaguing the war-torn nation.
The UN effort, known as the Community Sensitization Programme, will work towards helping the people of Sierra Leone realize the necessity for reconciliation; encouraging perpetrators of crimes to apologize to their victims; healing victims of human rights abuse; and educating the public on the different cultures and traditions in the country.
A spokesman for the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) said the rebel army will recognize and support the program, which is part of the Lome Peace Agreement.
