Continued Disarmament and Bloodshed in Sierra Leone

(Rapaport…July 23, 2001) Disarmament continued in Sierra Leone’s Kono region as 67 Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels and 16 pro-government Civil Defense Force (CDF) fighters handed over weapons to the UN on July 19.

The bloodshed also continued on July 19 as Guinean forces shelled the towns of Koindu and Kailahun, forcing Sierra Leonean residents and Liberian refugees to flee border areas. It is believed that 15 people were killed in the attacks.
