(Rapaport…July 19, 2001) Following a brutal attack by Angolan rebels on July 17 that claimed the lives of 70 people, a UN sanctions team began two days of meetings with government ministers on July 19.

The attack occurred in a residential area of the diamond-mining town of Chinguvu in the Lunda Norte province, located in northeast Angola. It has been estimated that some 100 gunmen were involved in the assault, which has been attributed to rebels of the National Union for Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).

The UN delegation plans to meet with several senior Angolan officials over the next two days and is scheduled to leave early on July 21.
