(Rapaport…May 9, 2001) A majority of Americans favor legislation to stop the flow of conflict diamonds into the United States, according to a recent poll commissioned by World Vision, a humanitarian organization.
The 62-percent of respondents who said they favor legislation did so after being told tat government reports concluded that diamond smuggling was fuelling civil wars in some African countries.
World Vision and more than 70 other human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Physicians for Human Rights, are calling on members of Congress to support Tony Hall’s Clean Diamonds Act (HR 918) that will restrict imports of conflict diamonds into the U.S.
