OAU Summit Boycotted

(Rapaport…July 11, 2000) Presidents’ Laurent Kabila of Congo and Sam Nujoma of Namibia backed Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos boycott of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) summit in Lome, Togo.

Dos Santos accuses Togo of trading conflict diamonds that have supported rebel armies in Angola’s civil war.

Zimbabwe president, Robert Mugabe is yet to attend, as is Charles Taylor, president of Liberia, who is accused of filtering most of the rebel diamonds that have fueled Sierra Leone’s decade-long civil war.
