(Rapaport…June 26, 2000) The Indian Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has stated that it will join world diamond leaders by implementing three initiatives to end the trade of conflict diamonds.

Effective July 7, all exporters of rough diamonds to India must ensure that the stones did not originate from African conflict centers, all banks are to withdraw finance from any exporter found dealing in conflict diamonds, and any GJEPC member found dealing in conflict diamonds will lose membership.

“The Indian diamond community is committed to achieve the objectives set by the UN and create a world free of conflict diamonds,” said Sanjay Kothari, chairman of the GJEPC.
