IDE Will Expel Conflict Traders

(Rapaport…June 12, 2000) The Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE) announced any member knowingly trading conflict diamonds that originate from rebel movements in Angola, Sierra Leone, or The Congo, will be expeled.

Shmuel Schnitzer, president of the (IDE), asked all the diamond exchanges in the world to adopt this decision in order to bring conflict diamond trading to an end.

The British Foreign Office will hold a special meeting concerning conflict diamonds later this month. Schnitzer and Udi Sheintal, controller of diamonds in the Israel Ministry of Industry and Trade, have been invited to the meeting to present the steps Israel is taking to halt the trade of these diamonds.
